Jennifer + Maggie's family farm elopement / Madison county, NC

September 01, 2021 in wedding, elopement

On their family’s farm, in the spectacular southern Appalachian mountains, on a grey but glorious spring day, Jennifer and Maggie became wives! As their own mothers signed the wedding certificate, Jennifer literally danced for joy. She explained that to her, the commitment was the heart of it, and all the rest. . . flowers, adornments, photographs. . all just icing on the cake.

A few months after their lovely little wedding, I had the honor of photographing Jennifer + Maggie once more. This time for maternity portraits! I’ll go ahead and share a few of those as well, along with some of Jennifer’s thoughts on her pregnancy.

For you, how does it feel to be pregnant?

“It’s been a complex and rich experience. We used Maggie’s egg and created an embryo which I am carrying, so there has been some processing around that for different reasons. As a same sex couple it’s been really cool that we landed on a way we both have a biological part in creating the baby and we are grateful for the opportunity to do that.”

Does pregnancy feel different than you expected?

“I think I imagined it would be a much more esoteric experience, where I would be connecting with the baby’s spirit, and meditating with her on those levels. And instead, it’s been the most embodied and relational experience I’ve ever had. I also thought the pregnancy would be way more about me and the baby, and it ended up being more about Maggie and I, and the baby, all together. It’s given us the opportunity to grow closer than ever in unity and commitment. Instead of it being a solo experience, which I’m more used to, it’s been a family experience, bringing us all closer together.”
