It was early December, overcast, and I remember thinking, “outdoor winter weddings? really? is this a good idea?” But as soon as I stepped out of my car, at Roan Mountain, at the North Carolina and Tennessee border, I realized, YES, this is a wonderful idea!
There was hardly a person in sight, and the clouds stretched like a welcoming grey comforter, with just enough worn spaces for the light to shine through.
Jade + Sean arrived with two of their closest friends; one human, one canine. Then, along with their officiant, we made our way through the pines and up to the first summit. The stillness and majesty of the mountains was absolutely breathtaking.
Patches of snow surrounded us, and we were occasionally gifted with a little sprinkling of more. Some kind + thoughtful soul had left a fire pit all set up with wood, ready to light, so after the exchange of vows, rings, kisses, and much joyful laughter, we made our way to the warmth of the fire. Then we ran around joyfully ohhing and ahhing at the mountains and sky until twilight fell. It honestly felt like we had magically, for a short time, stepped into a fairytale.
